To be a knife collector you need to have a real appreciation and passion for knives and everything about them.  There is even a name for those with an obsession for knives, they are called aichmomaniacs.

Those obsessed with knives will know everything about them, seeing them as works of art and will probably know a lot about the craftmanship and the history of knives as well. The passion for knife collecting

There are a number of reasons why people become obsessed with knives:

The knife enthusiast

Someone who is passionate about knives, knowledgeable about their history and appreciates their craftsmanship is definitely a knife enthusiast.   An enthusiast will enjoy collecting different knives and enjoy using them. They will be very knowledgeable about all the different types of blades and handle designs and the many different ways of sharpening knives.  Knife enthusiasts share a number of characteristics:

  • They appreciate knives as works of art.
  • They enjoy learning about the many different types of knives.
  • The enjoy collecting knives.
  • They are skilled in maintaining and sharpening knives.
  • They enjoy participating in events and shows concerning knives and meeting up with others interested in knives.

Knife enthusiasts are passionate about knives and everything about them, from their functionality to collecting them as pieces of artwork.

A knife connoisseur

A knife connoisseur has a real appreciation and love for knives.   They likely have a large collection of knives and know exactly what each and every knife is used for.  They would be considered knife experts. Knife connoisseurs all possess the following characteristics:

  • They are incredibly knowledgeable and have a full understanding of different types of knives, how each is designed and the purpose and function of each knife.
  • They have a real appreciation for the craftsmanship, both traditional construction techniques as well as modern techniques in knife-making.
  • A knife connoisseur is able to see whether a knife is of good quality by examining things such as the sharpness of the blade or the design of the handle.

And the following:

  • The knife connoisseur is highly knowledgeable; they are experts in this area and are considered unique in the world of knives.
  • They are experts in the maintenance of knives, understanding everything about cleaning and keeping knives sharp.
  • They know what they are looking at and can spot collectibles that are historically valuable.
  • They are experts in many knife techniques in cutting, carving and of course, filleting.
  • They are very learned about the history and traditions of knives from all over the world.

The Collector

Collectors of knives are those who have a passion for the craft and look for all the different types and designs in order to add them to their personal collections.   They are interested in the history of knives, the craftsmanship and the traditions connected to these knives.  They are also steeped in the knowledge and have great understanding of the different types of blades, handles and all aspects of knives.

  • There are a number of different kinds of knife collectors.   Some are interested in acquiring knives that have a tradition or have a history whilst others choose knives that were used by somebody significant or well-known.
  • Some collectors look for knives that have been made by truly skilled craftsmen using only the very best materials.  These collectors may also commission someone to make them a unique piece for their collections.
  • There are collectors who choose knives that are produced by quality manufacturers and will buy knives that are limited editions.
  • There are the traditional knife collectors who search for traditional folding knives with long histories and those linked to specific cultures.

A knife aficionado

Someone who has a real appreciation for knives and is more than just a casual admirer is considered a knife aficionado.  They see beauty and artistry in all the different types of knives.  They will have an expansive knowledge about the subject of knives, concerning blade styles, handle designs and materials, blade maintenance and cutting and sharpening techniques.

Knives will be a big focus in their lives and much time and energy will be put into learning about new models and finding knives for their collections.  They will be part of groups, shows and events where they can share their passion and knowledge.   They are excited and passionate about anything concerning knives.
