On April 25, tragedy struck when a foster mother from Indiana, weighing 340 pounds (nearly 154 Kg), sat on her 10-year-old foster son, crushing him to death. Jennifer Wilson’s attempt to restrain Dakota Stevens quickly turned fatal.
The incident occurred when Dakota, weighing just 91 pounds, tried running away after an argument at their Valparaiso home.
Earlier that day, Dakota had fled to a neighbor’s house, begging to be adopted. Dakota claimed, “My parents hit me in the face.” The neighbor later told officers that Dakota seemed desperate for help.
Upon returning home, Dakota threw himself onto the front lawn. Wilson sat on his midsection for five minutes, ignoring his desperate cries until he stopped moving altogether.
Wilson claimed she only intended to hold Dakota down while calling his caseworker.
“When she attempted to stop him from leaving, she does not know if she tackled Dakota or they fell to the ground.”
Wilson stated in court documents.
However, the consequences were far more severe than intended. Police arriving at the scene found Dakota unresponsive, with bruising visible on his neck and chest.
Emergency responders tried reviving the boy, but Dakota was already gone. His injuries included internal bleeding in his lungs and liver and severe bruising on his chest and neck.
