Long Island, New York has been thrust into a state of emergency as devastating brush fires continue to rage across the region, fueled by powerful winds. On March 8, 2025, New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued the emergency declaration to mobilize more resources in response to the blazes consuming parts of Suffolk County’s Pine Barrens.

I have spoken to @ExecEdRomaine and offered any necessary State resources. We have @NationalGuardNY helicopters providing air support, and multiple state agencies are on the ground.

The fires began on a brisk Saturday afternoon, quickly spreading through various towns, including Center Moriches, East Moriches, and Westhampton, with flames stretching two and a half miles in both width and length at their peak.
The impact of this calamity is significant, posing a profound threat to both the environment and the local economy. With approximately 600 acres scorched, the fires have left two firefighters injured, one with second-degree burns. Local infrastructure, such as roads and two commercial buildings, has also sustained damage. However, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine reassures that ‘no residential buildings were impacted.’
Efforts to subdue the fires were met with challenges due to the harsh gusts, recorded at speeds of up to 40 mph, complicating air and ground operations. The National Guard’s aerial support dropped water loads over the critical areas, combating the flames with the assistance of 600 firefighters from over 80 departments. Their relentless efforts saw progress, containing one of the largest fires by Sunday evening, while others remained under control.
The urgency of the situation also saw road closures, and an evacuation was ordered near Francis S Gabreski Airport as a precautionary measure. This state of emergency aims to prevent a scenario akin to the devastating wildfires that recently ravaged Southern California earlier this year. Authorities are determined not to relive such destruction, underlined by the collaborative response from state and local officials rallying to protect their community.
As the situation on Long Island slowly stabilizes, residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and comply with safety protocols. The hope is that with continued support and vigilance, the fires will be entirely subdued before they can inflict further damage.
